A Flower Grows in a Heart of Hope
by Bianca

December 31, 2007 was the day I finally turned thirteen. I got up and looked
at myself, I still looked short and skinny. I walked around the house until I
heard my sister wake up. I ran to my bed and acted as if I were sleeping.
Tea (my sister) liked to be the first organism I saw when I turned a new age,
it made her feel special. "Bianca, hurry you are thirteen!" she told me as
she jumped on top of me. I opened my eyes lazily, acting as if I had just
woken up.

Today, we are at our mother's house, but our Dad Alberto and our step
mom Marlene are coming to pick us up to take us out for a birthday brunch.
We would celebrate my birthday on Wednesday when we went to my Dad's
house.

Maggie and Snow
by Chloe

It was the summer of 2008. 4th of July. I wasn’t planning on doing anything
special. That’s the way it usually is with my crowd. We hang out. We don’t
expect much to happen. But things happen anyway, and sometimes they
turn out to be a matter of life and death. On this particular 4th of July, my
friends invited me to go down to Venice to watch the fireworks on the
beach. I thought it was a fine idea. Actually, I thought it was an awesome
idea because Miles was going to be there. Miles and I had a thing and it
was starting to build. With Miles there, I didn’t even need fireworks.

Freezer Burn
by Devon

That summer was hot, and I mean HOT. Not like fry an egg on the sidewalk
hot. I mean fry the entire Chicken hot. It was the hottest summer we could
remember. Even though we only had 7 or 8 to compare it to, and only 3 of
which we could really remember.

Anyways, Kaelin, Bridgett, my sister Tess, and I spent that hot Topanga
summer in nothing but our underwear, either in their pool, or our hot un-air
conditioned house. A favorite pass time of ours was jumping on the
trampoline. However it was so hot that we would grab ice from the freezer
and run down to the trampoline before it melted in order for the trampoline
to reach a reasonable temperature. But by the time we did all this we were
to hot and tired to jump, and instead stuck our own heads in the freezer.

My Transitional Summer
by Garrett

"Mr. Kassel, that sounds a lot like 'the dog ate my homework'", said the
judge while reprimanding my dad for his story as to why he had a backpack
full of cocaine on a family trip. This statement proved that I was not crazy. I
had taken my father to court because I found a massive quantity of cocaine
in his possession. I had suspected my dad has had a drug problem for a
long time, but it really hit me on this years "best Hawaii vacation ever". But
that is why my dad said about the trip to Maui in, '97, '98, '01, '03, '04, '05, and
'06. It was the second day in gorgeous Wailea, Hawaii; the sun was
glistening, warming my skin with every ray. In my cabana lay a beautiful
fitness model named Liliana, next to me her tiny top with her double D's
upon which every male had stared. Then out of nowhere I realized none of
these luxuries were mine, they all belonged to the guy laying down behind
me… my dad. The fitness model was my soon to be step-mom and the
cabana was reserved under my dad's name.

Sharks!
by Rowan

The crash of rolling waves and the cry of seagulls surrounded us. My
brother, Kirun, and his friend, Nick were wading into the ocean with me.
The three of us were heading out to catch some waves on our boogie
boards. We jumped on our boogie boards and started paddling out. That’s
when I noticed her.

She was some lady in a frilly green swimsuit and a snorkeling mask. "Hey
kids,"she casually said, "you know there are some sharks twenty to thirty
feet down the beach." I slowly sucked in my breath and let it out. Deep
down at heart I knew I was excited to see sharks but my outer core simply
felt scared. All three of us were thinking the same thing, I want to see but
I'm scared. Then we all turned and ran to shore dragging the boogie
boards behind us. We ran partly out of panic, partly out of excitement.
